"La Chronique de la Pucelle" states that they were Englishmen rather than St. Loup's regular clergy: "Some Englishmen were there in the aforesaid bell tower who put on the clothing of priests or churchmen, whom [the French soldiers] were going to kill; but the aforesaid Jehanne protected them, saying that no one should ever put churchmen on the spot; and she had them brought to Orléans."
