Footnote 372
This incident is described in at least two sources: the chronicle
of Eberhard von Windecken, and an entry in the archives of the Chamber
of Accounts of Nantes.
The former says that the confessor asked her if it was on God's
behalf that she came to help the King, to which she replied "yes";
the confessor then said that the Duke would therefore help the
king, naming the Duke his [the confessor's] rightful lord. The
confessor added that the Duke couldn't come himself, since he was
in "a great state of infirmity", but would send his son with a
great army. To this she replied that the Duke of Brittany was not
his rightful lord, but rather the King; adding that the Duke should
not have waited so long to send troops.
The latter source gives the names of the confessor (Friar Yves
Milbeau) and the herald (Hermine), and adds that the Duke also
sent her a dagger and several horses as a gift.
