Footnote 514

From a letter by the eyewitnesses Beauvau, Moreal, and Lussé on July 17, 1429: "To go get the Holy Vial in the Abbey of Saint Rémy and bring it into the church of Notre Dame... were appointed the Marshal of Boussac [Saint-Sévère], the lords of Rais, Graville, and the Admiral [Culan] with their four banners, which each was carrying in his hand, fully armored and on horseback, well accompanied to escort the Abbot who was bringing the vial from the aforesaid place; and they entered the great church on horseback and dismounted at the entrance to the chancel..." (for the original language, see Quicherat's "Procès...", Vol V, p. 129).

"Journal of the Siege of Orleans": "The next day, which was Sunday the 17th day of July, this same year, 1429, the lords of Saint-Sévère and Rais, Marshals of France; the lord of Graville, and the lord of Culan, Admiral of France, were, following the ancient custom, sent by the King to Saint Rémy to obtain the Holy Vial." (For the original language, see: Quicherat's "Procès...", Vol IV, p. 185).

The more terse Jean Chartier leaves out three of the Guardians of the Holy Vial: "And the aforesaid vial was carried from the Abbey of Saint Rémy into the Church of Notre Dame by the lord of Rais, Marshal of France." (For the original language, see: Quicherat's "Procès...", Vol IV, p. 77).
