Footnote 590

From the chronicle of Jacques le Bouvier: "and on the town's bridge... was captured the Earl of Suffolk, who had retreated to the aforesaid bridge after the town was taken; and he surrendered to a squire from Auvergne named Guillaume Regnault. The Earl knighted the aforesaid Guillaume Regnault, so that it could be said that he had been captured by a knight." (For the original language, see: Quicherat's "Procès...", Vol IV, p. 45).

From the chronicle of Jean Chartier: "...the Earl of Suffolk was captured by a man named Guillaume Regnault (the Earl knighted the aforesaid Regnault)..." (For the original language, see: Quicherat's "Procès...", Vol IV, p. 65).

From "Journal du Siège d'Orléans": "Many valiant men chased after the English [i.e., onto the bridge]; and in particular there was a French nobleman named Guillaume Regnault who was determined to capture the Earl of Suffolk, who asked him whether he was a nobleman: to which he replied yes; and again, whether he was a knight; and he said no. And then the Earl knighted him, and surrendered to him." (For the original language, see: Quicherat's "Procès...", Vol IV, p. 173).

An alternate version is found in the following sources:

A letter (BR ms fr. 7301), written shortly after the battle of Patay, says: "The Earl of Suffolk surrendered to the Maiden, on his knees..." (For the original language, see: Quicherat's "Procès...", Vol V, p. 122).

An entry from the municipal archives of La Rochelle says: "When the Earl of Suffolk saw the aforesaid capture [of the town] ... he said he would never surrender to them [Alençon and the other lords] ... calling out in a loud voice: 'I surrender to the Maiden, who is the most courageous woman in the world and who will defeat us all...' And in fact he came to the aforesaid Maiden and surrendered to her..." (For the original language, see "Une relation inédite sur Jeanne d'Arc", Revue Historique Tome 4, p. 340).
